As a bit of fun, I've named the 2-player (dual) and 3-player (triple) alliances between the different powers in Diplomacy. I did this on another site and it was made clear that this is a little pointless.
Well, yes it is... but so what? It's a bit of fun, nothing more.
You'll find that, when I'm writing, I'll use either the alliance name or the type of alliance it is. For instance, the dual alliance between England and France could be:
England and...
France: The Entente Cordiale (Anglo-French)
Italy: The Hadrian (Anglo-Italian) - The Roman Emperor Hadrian is reputed to have built Hadrian's Wall to protect Roman Britain from the dastardly Scots. On his own.
Germany: The Saxon (Anglo-German)
Austria: The Ostend (Anglo-Austrian) - When England and the Habsburg Empire allied in the 7 Years War, the Empire agreed to end it's overseas expansion which had been run by the Ostend Company.
Turkey: The Coven (Anglo-Turkish) - England and Turkey are known as the Witches.
Russia: The Anglonaut (Anglo-Russian)
France and...
Italy: The Gaulish (Franco-Italian)
Germany: The Rhineland (Franco-German)
Austria: The Marie-Antoinette (Austro-French)
Turkey: The Mediterranean (Franco-Turkish)
Russia: The Franconaut (Franco-Russian)
Italy and...
Germany: The Pact of Steel (Italo-German) - I don't usually like to use WWII alliance names for Dip but this one just fits.
Austria: The Adriatic (Austro-Italian) - I know. This is the Lepanto, isn't it? I don't like using names for openings to name alliances. So, no, it isn't.
Turkey: The Unholy Alliance (Italo-Turkish)
Russia: The Wintergreen (Russo-Italian)
Germany and...
Austria: The Dual Alliance (Austro-German) - I told you I don't like using WWII terms for Dip and the name often used for this alliance, the Anschluss, is one such. Besides, the Anschluss wasn't so much an alliance as an invasion. And the Dual Alliance is a very serviceable WWI name for this alliance.
Turkey: The Railroad (Germano-Turkish) - Prior to WWI Germany managed to ally herself to Turkey so she could build railroads in Turkey.
Russia: The Chequered (Russo-German)
Austria and...
Turkey: The Osturk (Austro-Turkish)
Russia: The Peppermint (Austro-Russian)
Turkey and...
Russia: The Juggernaut (Russo-Turkish)
3-way Alliances
England, France and...
Italy: The Spaghetti Western - Not my name but I love it!
Germany: The Western Triple
Austria: The Faerie - From the initials of the three powers (F/A/E) and, let's face it, to make this one work you'd need a little Tinkerbell dust.
Turkey: The Crimean
Russia: The Triple Entente
England, Italy and...
Germany: The Guillotine - A French name for a French execution machine... and France faces the end here.
Austria: The Aegis - From the initials (A/E/I) with a couple of letters added to find a cool name.
Turkey: The Maritime - All three powers have a much to gain - if not more - from being maritime powers.
Russia: The Verbrennung - The German for 'burning'... which is what happens if your set on fire... which is a word you get by adding 'f' to I/R/E, And Germany gets burned by this alliance. OK, I know...
England, Germany and...
Austria: The Germanic
Turkey: Russia's Bane
Russia: The Northern Triple
England, Austria and...
Turkey: The Scimitar - A curved blade, and a curve is what you get if you draw a line between London, Vienna and Ankara... sort of.
Russia: The Drucken - Germany will be heavily pressed by this alliance; drucken is the German for press.
England, Turkey and...
Russia: The Eastern Arc
France, Italy and...
Germany: The Swiss Star
Austria: The Garanzia - Italian for guarantee, and Italy is guaranteed while this alliance stands. Not for long, then.
Turkey: The South Seas Triple
Russia: The Vice - This alliance could hold the rest of the board in a vice.
France, Germany and...
Austria: The Alsatian - Republican France defeated an Austro-Prussian alliance in 1793, and took control of Alsace following this.
Turkey: The Graft - Using the initials G/A/F to form a word that describes what you'll need to do to make this alliance work.
Russia: The German Ocean Triple - The North Sea's alternative name is the German Ocean. Not the William and Mary because that's an opening.
France, Austria and...
Turkey: The Schiacciare - Italian for crushed... which describes Italy's hopes.
Russia: The Austerlitz - At the Battle of Austerlitz, France defeated the Austro-Russian alliance.
France, Turkey and...
Russia: The Bridge - Connects France to the Juggernaut.
Italy, Germany and...
Austria: The Central Triple
Turkey: The Vienna Sandwich - Vienna is sandwiched between the players in this alliance. And the Vienna Sandwich cake is tasty.
Russia: The Cleaver - This alliance cuts the board in half.
Italy, Austria and...
Turkey: Tia Maria - Formed from T/I/A, and well there isn't a huge jump from there.
Russia: The Gobbler
Italy, Turkey and...
Russia: The Southern Arc
Germany, Austria and...
Turkey: The Bear Trap - The Russian bear is trapped in.
Russia: The Dreikaiserbund - The League of the Three Emperors was an alliance between Russia, Austria and Germany in the late Nineteenth Century.
Germany, Turkey and...
Russia: The Wedge - With Germany being the point of the wedge.
Austria, Turkey and...
Russia: The Eastern Triple
Well, yes it is... but so what? It's a bit of fun, nothing more.
You'll find that, when I'm writing, I'll use either the alliance name or the type of alliance it is. For instance, the dual alliance between England and France could be:
- the Entente Cordiale - it's name;
- the Anglo-French alliance - descriptive, or
- the A/F alliance - shorthand.
I don't bother with descriptions for triple alliances. So the triple alliance between Russia, Germany and Austria could be:
- the Dreikaiserbund - it's name, or
- the A/R/G alliance - shorthand.
Imagine trying to call this the Austro-Russo-German alliance! Damn.
2-way Alliances
